Diet and Health

Diet. Eat a well-balanced diet of meats, fruits, vegetables and dairy products. Try not to skip meals. Avoid excess intake of sweets and snacks. Caffeine should be used in moderation (no more than 1-2 cups of coffee or tea a day.) SMOKING AND ALCOHOL SHOULD BE AVOIDED DURING PREGNANCY. Take a prenatal vitamin daily. If you do not use dairy products, you should take a 500 mg. calcium pill a day. An extra iron pill, such as Ferrous Sulfate, should be taken during the last half of your pregnancy if prescribed by your doctor.

Environment. It is best to avoid exposure to chemicals, paint and varnish fumes during pregnancy. If you have a cat, you should not handle the cat during pregnancy and should stay away from the litter box. You should also avoid hot baths, hot tubs, saunas and tanning beds.

Exercise. You may continue your normal activities during pregnancy. Walking, swimming and bicycling are excellent exercises. Activity that makes you uncomfortable or causes cramping should be avoided. If you do strenuous exercises, such as jogging or weight lifting, discuss your activities with your doctor.

If you have additional concerns or questions about your pregnancy, please do not hesitate to ask your physician.
