Talk to Us About Your Birth Control Options
Today’s women have many birth control options. In fact, there are so many that sometimes it’s difficult to know what’s right for you. That’s where our personalized approach comes in. We will talk to you to determine what method of contraception is best suited to your needs and time in life.Delaying Conception
You may simply want to delay pregnancy until later in life. In this situation, we will explore options such as oral contraceptives (the birth control pill), IUDs or hormone shots, patches or vaginal rings. We will discuss considerations such as overall effectiveness, potential side effects and your comfort level with each.
One of our more popular choices is the Mirena® levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system. A small, flexible device is inserted into the uterus in only minutes during an office visit. This estrogen-free intrauterine contraceptive (IUC) delivers small amounts of hormone directly to the uterus for 99.9% effectiveness in preventing pregnancy. The Mirena IUC can be removed at any time for a quick return to fertility. More info.
Permanent Methods of Contraception
We offer several options for women who desire permanent freedom from the possibility of pregnancy. Whenever possible, surgical sterilization or tubal ligations are completed through minimally invasive procedures.
If you are considering a permanent end to conception, ask Dr. Morrison about Essure® Sterilization. Essure® is a permanent birth control device that has recently become available as an alternative to traditional tubal ligation methods. Dr. Morrison is trained to perform the Essure® procedure, which can be conducted during an office visit.
During the Essure® procedure, a spring-like device is inserted through the uterine cavity into the openings of the fallopian tubes using a hysteroscope. The device expands to fill the tubal opening, and over time scar tissue forms around the Essure® device, creating a barrier so that sperm cannot reach the egg.
Because of the scar tissue that forms in the fallopian tubes, the Essure® device cannot be pulled out of the tubes. It is considered a permanent method of birth control and in this respect is similar to other tubal ligation methods.
The Essure® procedure does not require cutting or burning, nor does it require general anesthesia. It can be performed safely and comfortably in the doctor's office. Most women return to their normal activities within one day after the procedure is performed.
Essure® inserts do not contain hormones and will not interfere with the monthly menstrual cycle. It is FDA-approved and has been in use for more than five years. The procedure is 99.8 percent effective based on four years of follow-up, and is the only birth control method resulting in zero pregnancies in clinical trials.
There are some risks associated with the Essure® procedure. Talk to Dr. Morrison about these risks, and whether Essure® sterilization is right for you. More info.
Insurance Coverage for Essure®
The Essure® procedure is covered by most insurance providers. If the procedure is performed in a doctor's office, some insurance providers require only a co-pay. Talk to your insurance provider about coverage for the Essure procedure.
